Knowing how a project actually unfolds removes most of the anxiety around it. Decorative concrete is not disruptive in the way a full remodel is, but there are stages, dust, and dry times worth planning for. At Decorative Concrete of Austin, here is what a typical decorative concrete project looks like from first call to final walkthrough.

ToggleStep 1: The on-site estimate
Everything starts with an in-person visit, not a phone number. We look at the slab, its condition, existing coatings, cracks, and moisture, then discuss what you want from the space. You get a written estimate covering scope, system, prep, finish, and timeline. Our guide on questions to ask a contractor covers what to ask at this stage.
Step 2: Scheduling and preparing the space
Before we arrive, the area needs to be cleared: furniture out, vehicles moved, items off the floor. We will tell you exactly what to move and what we handle. Our installation prep guide walks through this in detail so nothing is a surprise on day one.
Step 3: Surface preparation
This is the noisiest, dustiest, and most important stage. We grind the slab mechanically to remove coatings, adhesives, and the dense top layer, creating the profile that lets the finish bond. We use dust containment, but expect noise and some airborne dust. Cracks and damage are repaired at this point. Most failures in decorative concrete trace back to prep being rushed, so we do not rush it.
Step 4: Applying the finish
Now the visible work happens: stain applied and neutralized, concrete polished through the grit sequence, or a coating laid down and broadcast with flake. This stage is often faster than the prep that preceded it. For coatings, a polyaspartic topcoat can allow the whole system to go down in a single day.
Step 5: Cure and dry times
Patience here protects the finish. Sealers, coatings, and stains each need time before foot traffic, furniture, and vehicles. Timelines vary by system and by weather, since Austin heat and humidity affect cure, as covered in our guide to cure time in Central Texas. We confirm the specific windows before we leave.
Step 6: Walkthrough and aftercare
We walk the finished floor with you, point out what to expect as it settles, and explain maintenance. Every finish has a simple care routine, and following it from day one is what keeps a floor looking new. Choosing among finishes is covered in how to choose the right floor.
How long does it all take?
Most residential projects run a few days from prep through final cure, depending on size, system, and dry times. Coatings can be faster; multi-coat stained floors and large areas take longer. We give you a timeline up front and tell you honestly if the slab turns up surprises. We serve Austin and surrounding areas, are fully insured, and have completed more than 1,000 projects since 2012.
